Our Special Guest was Rocky Aoki, founder of Benihana's Restaurant chain, philanthropist & environmentalist, author of “Making it in America: The Life and Times of Rocky Aoki” and “Sake.” This event was held to benefit the Northern Virginia Special Olympics Athletes.

The Angels Network event raised over $3,000 for the Special Olympic athletes. In addition, people contributed a number of sports equipment items including basket balls, soccer balls, and a pair of cross country skis!

Our 4th Annual Silent Auction at The Barns of Wolf Trap was a tremendous success.  Nearly 200 people attended the Copacabana with celebrity angel, Wendy Rieger, NBC News 4 Anchor, as the Master of Ceremonies. Friends of the Angels Network were the benefactors of a beautiful evening while enjoying flamenco dancing, guitar music, culinary delights from Mindy's Catering and the prospect of bidding on over 80 high-end auction items.  Proceeds from the event amounted to approximately $25,000 and will benefit various groups, individuals and worthwhile causes in the year ahead.  Our deepest thanks to all of our patrons for their kindness and generosity.

"Summer Intern Mentoring Program 2003"
Since 2000, the Angels Network has partnered with the Washington DC Board of Trade to provide summer workshops for college aged interns in the DC area and to help them prepare to enter the workforce. The workshops covered:

  • Resumes, Interviews, Job Search and Networking
  • Philanthropy 101 – Advancing your Career through Volunteering
  • Managing Money - Personal Finances
  • Personal Presentation Skills - Office Etiquette

The workshops were organized and conducted by women involved in The Angels Network. The Angels Network provided workshop handouts, a catered lunch, and on-site resume critiques for nearly 100 interns.

The Angels Network also provided two scholarships to support summer interns at Fairfax Area Christian Emergency & Transitional Services (FACETS ) and the Fairfax County Public Library Foundation. The Angels Network supplied the scholarship, while the non-profit organization provided a learning environment for the intern.

On Tuesday, July 15th the Angels Network held a reception at the home of Jill and Jeff Lubore to benefit the Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA). FOHA strives to provide a safe haven for abused and abandoned animals. FOHA's vision is to raise enough money to build a new enclosed shelter to help prevent animals from suffering through the winter.

Our Angels made cash contributions exceeding $5,000 and donated many items from the "wish list" circulated by FOHA prior to the event.

Our annual fishing trip was once again a great success. Sherry Cushman and her husband Don Schaaf offered their lovely home in Annapolis to a dozen of our Neighborhood Network kids to fish, have fun and enjoy a delicious barbecue. Many fish were caught and our volunteer photographer, John Kenny, got many action photos. He took instant Polaroids as they were reeling in the big ones and each child got a photo to take home. The Cushman-Schaaf team has graciously offered their waterfront home again next year for this annual festivity and we will no doubt take them up on it!!
